The EU sees human rights as universal and indivisible.
It promotes and defends them within its borders and in its relations with outside countries.
At the same time there are the wide powers in this area held by the national governments of its member states.
The focus of the Union’s human rights policy is on civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights. It also seeks to promote the rights of women and of children as well as of minorities and displaced persons.
What focus area do you think is still a European problem and needs more attention? Please share your opinion with us!
• strengthening democracy, good governance and the rule of law (support for political pluralism, a free
media and sound justice system);
• abolishing the death penalty in countries which still retain it;
• combating torture through preventive measures (like police training and education) and repressive measures
(creating international tribunals and criminal courts);
• fighting racism and discrimination by ensuring respect for political and civil rights.

human rights/fighting racism
by Anonymous on 03 October 2009 - 11:42.It's imperative that Europe join efforts to ensure that human rights are being respected by EVERY citizin in europe, especially muslims, since they don't see every human as equal.
Also, as every democracy in the west, respect the separation church/state which is non-existend by that political ideology: islam. Muslims are trying to break down this separation by putting religieus law above the civil law through demands under the guise of religion (their intentions are political, not religieus)
Since muslims abuse words like discrimination and racism for the goal of getting their demands met, people must see what is really happening: submitting every non-believer, who is inferior in their eyes - which is in fact a contradiction with human rights, which states that every human is EQUAL.
This is a big concern for many people because in every european country there are problems with young immigrants, especially with those who believe (and are aggressive/fanatic about it) the ancient ideas from a book which they literally interpret: quran
This poses a threat that may not be underestimated or else our freedom/democracy will be in danger.
It's the duty of europe to be alert and safeguard our way of life and especially our FREEDOM as equal human beings
